‘The Two Sues: MOLA Managing Editors par excellence’:
Unsung heroes of London archaeology No. 173

Ian Blair

The two Sues as they are fondly known, arrived as a pair at MOLA in 2000 as Managing Editors for the Greater London Publication Programme funded by Historic England to deal with selected sites from pre-1992,and remained with MOLA for the next 21 years.

In that time, they edited or oversaw the publication of over 150 MOLA books as well as numerous journal articles and other MOLA publications.

It is sad, but fitting, that they have now left the building together, having elected to retire from MOLA at the end of July: not that editors ever really retire, as they are now focused on their own post-excavation work of the Bordesley Abbey church, where an exceptional 1m of floor levels survived inside the main body of the church.

I would like to personally thank both Sues for their guidance, help, and good advice over so many years. Both have been an inspiration to me, especially in relation to the Prittlewell and Walbrook publications, and I hold them both in high esteem. I cannot begin to think how MOLA can ever hope to replace their combined expertise.
